Two people were seriously injured Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer crashed into their pickup truck, police said.

The accident was first reported at around 11:30 a.m. on Route 23 north just south of the Mountain View Boulevard exit, Capt. Laurence Martin of the Wayne Police Department said in a news release.

The crash occurred in the center lane of traffic when the pickup truck was struck by a tractor-trailer. The crash shut down traffic in the center and right lanes.

A driver and passenger inside the pickup truck were removed from the vehicle by Wayne police and the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad, said Martin.

Those injured were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where they were listed in "extremely serious condition," Martin said.
