The N.C. Highway Patrol says a tow truck operator helping a family whose van had broken down on Interstate 95 has been killed in a crash.
The Wilson Daily Times reports 44-year-old Jeffery Allen Rackley of Rocky Mount was killed Monday after responding to a call near Exit 116 and preparing to load the van onto his rollback.
According to the patrol, a motorist ran off the interstate, sideswiped the van and hit Rackley.
The patrol charged 67-year-old Paul Joseph Dattari of Raeford with felony failure to move over causing serious injury or death, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving. Dattari is free on $5,000 bond. It's not known if he has an attorney.
There have been eight traffic-related deaths in the Wilson-Edgecombe County area since last weekend.
