Zeeland Township, MI : 20-year-old man critically injured in crash with semi-truck in Ottawa County on Thursday morning, April 28, 2016
A 20-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash with a semi-truck Thursday morning in Zeeland Township.
Emergency crews responded to the crash scene at about 8:30 a.m.
The preliminary investigation showed that the 2013 Kenworth semi — driven by 62-year-old Joseph Matthews of Rockford, Ill. — exited eastbound I-196, stopped at the stop sign at Bryon Road and then attempted to turn left, police said. Miguel Gutierrez of Zeeland was driving east on Byron Road and could not avoid colliding with the semi that pulled out in front of his car, said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
Gutierrez’s 2002 Pontiac Sunbird went under the semitrailer.
Guiterrez was knocked unconscious and pinned inside his car until he was extricated by Zeeland Township firefighters. An Aero Med helicopter transported him to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
