Deltona, FL : One person killed after Car strikes bridge, catches fire in fatal Volusia I-4 crash on Wednesday morning, March 2, 2016
A person was killed Wednesday morning in a fiery crash when a sport utility vehicle struck a guardrail on a bridge on Interstate 4 near Deltona in West Volusia, a Florida Highway Patrol official said.
Florida Highway Patrol reported that the 9:29 a.m. crash at Enterprise Road near Deltona killed a person after a vehicle struck a bridge, FHP's Sgt. Kim Montes said.
According to Montes, witnesses said a sport utility vehicle was speeding on eastbound I-4 and ran off the road striking a guardrail on bridge at mile marker 109 near Deltona.
The vehicle burst into flames and the driver was killed. The driver was reported as being in the vehicle as troopers have just arrived on scene to investigate, Montes said.
Earlier in the morning Wednesday, an eight-vehicle crash was reported about 15 miles north, on westbound I-4, Montes said.
Traffic on eastbound I-4 was being diverted at exit 108 near the crash where the SUV caught fire killing its driver, Montes said.
"At this time, Enterprise Road over I-4 is closed as DOT is currently inspecting the bridge for any damage," Montes said. As of 11 a.m. I-4 westbound is fully open and eastbound I-4 has one lane open, she said.
