IMMOKALEE, FL : Neighbors say bus stop where boy was killed is dangerous on Friday, 7th October 2016
A 6-year-old boy was just one block from his bus stop when he was hit and killed by a truck Friday morning in Immokalee.
Neighbors said dozens of kids travel every day, usually unsupervised, to this bus stop. After what happened, everyone is feeling a sense of loss knowing it could have been one of theirs.
What angered some is the overwhelming thought that the death of Luis Reynoso Fransisco could have been prevented.
“There’s always about 30 to 40 kids getting off the bus,” said Anna Martinez. “And you have a whole bunch just walking down the street. There’s a lot of speeders. Even though we have bumps, it doesn’t stop them.”
Neighbors pointed to weathered signs in the area and burned out lights all needing to be replaced.
"It angers me a lot because all of this could have been prevented,” said Immokalee resident Ruven. “You don't have lights at night, especially on the roundabout. You don't have signs to tell you there are kids here. You don't have any of that."
The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of the GMC truck is cooperating and the crash is still under investigation. It happened at the corner of N 19th Street and Immokalee Drive at 7:20 a.m.
Fransisco's mother was walking with him when the crash happened.
Everyone in the neighborhood said they can sympathize with both sides.
