Cumberland, RI : 81-year-old woman dead after being hit by car on Mendon Road on Tuesday morning, January 12, 2016

Police say an elderly woman who was struck by a car while crossing a busy road has died.

Authorities say 81-year-old Irene Wilkinson, of Pawtucket, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for injuries to her head and knees after being struck by a car Tuesday morning on Mendon Road. Police found Wilkinson lying in the roadway.

Police said Wednesday that Wilkinson had died from her injuries.

Police say the driver of the car, a 29-year-old Cumberland man, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Police haven't said whether the man is facing charges.
