Sunol, CA : 31-year-old driver injured in 3-vehicle crash on Highway 84 in Sunol on Wednesday, January 21, 2015

A man who suffered major injuries in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday on Highway 84 remained hospitalized in critical condition Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officers responded at 5:41 p.m. to eastbound 84, east of the General Electric plant, where officers found a GMC truck, a Ford truck and a Ford Mustang in a wreck, Officer Derek Reed said.

Reed said the 31-year-old driver of the GMC was traveling west on Highway 84 near Interstate 680 and for unknown reasons crossed over the double yellow lines and struck the Ford truck which was traveling eastbound.

The Ford Mustang was hit by debris from the crash but the 48-year-old man driving the car was not injured.

The 55-year-old man driving the Ford truck was also not injured but the driver of the GMC suffered major injuries and was taken to a trauma center.

The ages and hometowns of the drivers of each vehicle were not immediately known.

As of Thursday the wreck remained under investigation but Reed said that alcohol or drugs were not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

The crash blocked both directions of the highway until about 7:20 p.m.
