A wrongway driver died in a New Year's Day crash on an Interstate 15 collector lane near 1300 South in Salt Lake City.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the 37-year-old driver was ejected as the vehicle rolled after swerving to avoid an oncoming car and into a barrier wall at 7:21 a.m. Friday. Troopers later identified the driver as Carl E. Olsen of Taylorsville.
The southbound Mazda 3 sedan had entered the northbound collector — which connects 21st South and I-80 to I-15 — from 9th South., Royce said.
Olsen was not wearing a seat belt, according to UHP.Royce said there was no immediate indication of drug or alcohol use at the scene, but the investigation was ongoing.
Three northbound lanes through the accident scene were closed for several hours, with traffic being diverted to alternate routes.
