Midway, FL : One person is dead and a second injured in car crash at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Hilltop Drive on Thursday, February 18, 2016

One person is dead and a second is in the hospital following a police chase in Midway.

According to Midway Police, shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, authorities initiated a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

Officers from Midway Police Department and Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the pursuit.

Police say the chase began in Midway, and ended in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Hilltop Drive when the vehicle crashed.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver was from fleeing police when he spun off of the roadway and struck a brick mailbox. The vehicle then collided with two culvert ditches and overturned, coming to a final rest on its tires on the shoulder of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The vehicle's passenger, 18-year-old Trevor Chambers of Havana, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 19-year-old Malik Dwayne Saunders of Pensacola, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The case was turned over to FHP for further investigation.
