Odessa, FL : Tarpon Springs driver dies in Pasco accident on State Road 54 Friday afternoon on October 3, 2014

An 87-year-old driver died Friday afternoon after he turned left into the path of an oncoming car on State Road 54. The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was from Tarpon Springs, according to authorities. The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. when the man, who was driving a 1998 Buick LeSabre west on SR 54, tried to turn left onto Black Lake Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. The Buick collided with a 2000 BMW that was traveling east on 54. The BMW driver, Paul Scala, 41, of Tampa, swerved but was unable to avoid the Buick, which spun in the road before ending up in the eastbound lane of 54.
