Tom River, NJ : 28-year-old woman died, child injured in a single-vehicle car crash in Ocean County on Wednesday morning, March 9, 2016

A single-vehicle car crash Wednesday morning left a 28-year-old township woman dead and a young child hospitalized, police said.

The child was a passenger in the vehicle and had to be pulled out from an overturned 2015 Honda by rescue workers, Officer Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department, said in a statement sent to news outlets.

The child was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Stocco added.

The driver, who was only identified as a 28-year-old woman from Toms River, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stocco said the woman was driving southbound on New Hampshire Avenue at 11:15 a.m. when, for reasons not known yet, the car crossed the center yellow line and left the roadway. It then went over the curb and crashed into several trees, coming to a rest on its side in a water retention basin.

Members of the Pleasant Plains and Silverton fire companies, as well as Silverton First Aid Squad, responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Toms River police Detective Randy Petrick and Officers Adam Koeppen, Steve Schwartz and Robert Westfall.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Ocean County Sheriff's Department CSI Unit are also assisting with the investigation.

Additional assistance at the scene was provided by the Lakewood Township Hatzolah Volunteer First Aid Squad.

No additional information on the crash was available Wednesday afternoon.
