Decatur, AL : Decatur man found dead in wrecked vehicle on Saturday, January 14th 2017

A Decatur man was found dead in a wrecked vehicle Saturday morning after suffering an apparent medical emergency, police said.

Wendell Ray Shankle, 83, was driving a Chevrolet SUV on Second Street Southwest when the wreck occurred at Old Moulton Road. Emergency responders arrived after a call to 911 at 7:23 a.m. They found the SUV off the road and with heavy front-end damage from striking a tree. Decatur Fire and Rescue determined Shankle was not breathing and had no pulse.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn pronounced Shankle dead at the scene.

Police said Shankle suffered from an unknown medical event and died prior his vehicle leaving the roadway.
