Memphis, TN : Three killed in multi-vehicle crash along I-55 in Byram on Saturday, 20th August, 2016
Three people died and many others were transported to hospitals Saturday afternoon, following a fiery crash on I-55.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said, "No names are being released at this time... It will need to be confirmed through dental records or DNA before releasing any information".
One eyewitness said, “All I heard was a big boom. I saw smoke, fire and dust," said Yolanda Singleton.
Singleton was on a nearby road when seven cars and two 18-wheelers crashed before bursting into flames.“At that time, I begin to hear a lady screaming from the car and my heart dropped because I knew there was no way she could get out and we can get to her," said Singleton.
“This is the worst accident seen in my 16 years in law enforcement,” said Byram Police Chief Luke Thompson.
The northbound lanes on I-55 in the Byram were also shut down for several hours after multi-vehicle crash.
“We do know the crash probably occurred anywhere from 50 to 75 yards south of what you see here at final rest and you can see these concrete walls," explained Thompson. "Since they tore up and started rebuilding this highway, it is one wreck after the other and y'all see daily."
While police reconstruct the accident scene to find a cause, resident Yolanda Singleton said she is praying for the people involved because what she witnessed was heartbreaking.
“The most heartbreaking thing is hearing that lady scream," said Singleton. "Hearing that lady scream. That would be a sound I will remember for a long time."
