Sumter County, FL : Fiery crash closes Interstate 75 in Sumter County overnight on June 22, 2014
A stretch of Interstate 75 in Sumter County has reopened after a fiery crash.
It happened just after 9 p.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 306, several miles north of State Road 50.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a Ford Focus, driven by 19-year-old Dominique Benjamin, was traveling behind a tractor-trailer in the inside lane.
Traveling faster than the truck, Benjamin overtook the semi. In an effort to avoid a collision, both drivers took evasive action. Troopers said they lost control of their vehicles, which subsequently collided.
The semi then traveled to the shoulder where it collided with the guardrail and erupted in flames.
Benjamin and a 6-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. They, along with a 5-year-old boy in the car, were transported to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills. All three reside in Land O’ Lakes.
The tractor-trailer’s driver was not injured in the crash.
Benjamin was charged with careless driving.
Troopers closed the interstate from SR-50 to SR-476 until 4 a.m. Monday to clean up spilled fuel and the accident.
