Ann Arbor, MI : Driver injured in crash with Dearborn Heights police dies on Monday, January 2nd 2017
A man has died after being involved in a two-vehicle crash Jan. 2 that also injured two on-duty Dearborn Heights police officers.
Timothy Turner, 59, died Jan. 2 from multiple injuries sustained in the crash, according to Lloyd Jackson, spokesman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. near the intersection of Van Born and Pelham roads, an intersection that crosses three jurisdictions - Allen Park, Taylor and Dearborn Heights.
According to preliminary reports, a Dearborn Heights patrol vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was driving east on Van Born Road, attempting to catch up to a car to make a traffic stop. In doing so, the vehicle entered the intersection of Pelham Road, striking a Lexus ES 350 driven by Turner, who was heading west on Van Born, attempting to make a left turn onto southbound Pelham Road.
According to some witnesses, the police cruiser sped through the intersection without any emergency lights or sirens on.
The two unnamed officers were extricated from the patrol vehicle by emergency personnel and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They later were released.
The Allen Park Police Department took the initial lead in the investigation, but turned it over to the Michigan State Police, who say it will be several weeks before it’s determined who was at fault.
Turner’s family reportedly has hired an attorney in the case.
Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin couldn’t comment on the state police’s investigation, but said both officers have been discharged from the hospital.
“One was readmitted with some complications for a lacerated kidney, but other than that they’re doing good,” Gavin said. Both are recovering and will be back on duty, he added.
