CLOVERDALE, IN : Quincy man seriously injured in single-vehicle crash on Wednesday, January, 24th 2018

A coughing fit apparently caused a single-vehicle wreck that seriously injured a Quincy man Wednesday evening.

James L. Hoffa, 64, Quincy, was airlifted from the scene by StatFlight helicopter, suffering from major leg and internal injuries after his car struck a tree head-on.

Responders from Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department and Operation Life, as well as Deputy Jeffery Freeman worked together to extricate Hoffa from his 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix.

A witness told Deputy Scott Ducker that Hoffa’s car was eastbound on 42 approaching County Road 750 East when it veered off the road for no apparent reason.

The vehicle continued down an embankment before striking the tree. The impact pinned Hoffa in the vehicle.

Ducker said that Hoffa was conscious enough to report that he had started coughing uncontrollably prior to the crash. He said he then blacked out from the coughing, which apparently led to the crash.

Also responding to the scene were a pair of Indiana State Police troopers who assisted with the investigation and traffic control.
