Town OF Easton, WI : Driver in fatal Wisconsin crash that left 2 preteen girls dead on Friday, August 8, 2014
An SUV that crashed and overturned on Friday, killing two 12-year-old passengers, was being driven by a 16-year-old girl who didn't have a driver's license, authorities said Monday.
The girl appeared in juvenile court Monday, where she was placed on electronic monitoring and ordered not to drive.
Prosecutors asked for 48 hours to file charges against the girl, whose name hasn't been released. Judge Greg Huber granted the request and then recused himself from further involvement, saying he knows the grandparents of children involved in the crash.
The girl was driving Friday with nine passengers, ages 12 to 15. She lost control and the vehicle rolled several times, coming to rest along trees along the south side of Highway 52 near Rocky Road.
Reighlee Stevenson of Oshkosh was declared dead at the scene. Another 12-year-old, Deserae Landowski of Wausau, died the next day at a hospital.
A third person remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition. Seven others were treated and released from hospitals.
Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks said he didn't know how many people were wearing seat belts. He also said investigators haven't found any indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The Wausau School District and Horace Mann Middle School were making counseling services available to students.
