CLINTON, NY : Hamilton College mourns professor killed in accident on Wednesday, November, 8th 2017

Hamilton College hosted an informal gathering tonight in honor of a professor who was killed earlier today in a car accident while cycling in Kirkland. The gathering, for Sam Pellman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of Music, took place at 7:30 p.m. in Dwight Lounge.

According to a notice sent out to the college by President David Wippman and Dean of Faculty Margaret Gentry, Pellman had been at the college for nearly 40 years.

“He was a widely admired teacher, a groundbreaking scholar in the area of electroacoustic music and an indispensable part of the fabric of this community, serving as associate dean, Posse mentor, and on nearly every elected faculty committee and on multiple ad hoc committees formed to address college priorities, especially those involving the arts,” the two officials wrote in the notice.

According to the notice, in April 2015, Pellman received the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

The Counseling Center will have additional hours and students can call the counseling line at 315-859-4340, the notice said.

Oneida County Deputies said Pellman, 64, was riding his bike on Kirkland Avenue, just after noon, when he was struck from behind by a Hyundia Sonata operated by Annabelle Bloomquist, 86, also of Clinton. The accident is still under investigation and has been turned over to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit.
