Fort Lauderdale, FL : Driver lost control of his sport utility vehicle and triggered a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 on Monday evening July 28th 2014
Several Good Samaritans sprang into action to rescue a driver after he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and triggered a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95, Monday evening.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver was traveling northbound on I-95 in a red Ford Explorer when he experienced tread separation on one of his rear tires, just north of Sunrise Boulevard, around 6:30 p.m. The SUV then started veering from side to side before hitting a car, which caused the Explorer to overturn several times, trapping the driver inside.
"All of a sudden I see a car flip like 10 times up ahead, and I was like freaking out," said Javier Marsans, who witnessed the collision and captured the ensuing rescue on cell phone video. "I said, 'I hope there's no kids in this car or a woman.'"
"I didn't even know if it was a car, a truck. It was just incredible," Marsans continued. "I saw it flipping over so many times with so much speed. It was like a race car accident."
Other vehicles tried to avoid hitting each other, but two others were caught in the chain-reaction accident.
Witnesses turned into rescuers as they ran over to pry the driver from his Explorer. "Everybody was freaking out. It was so bad that they really wanted to help, you know what I mean?" said Marsans.
Marsans' video captures the group of strangers lifting the SUV in an attempt to free the driver. "Once I get there, I see them pulling out a big, big, strong guy, and you know, thank God," said Marsans. "He had a crack on his head, a huge crack. It was amazing."
Marsans said the Good Samaritans' swift response was crucial to the driver's rescue. "Like 20 people put the car over, not 20, like 10 people," he said. "Thank God they were there. If not, he wouldn't be alive."
Paramedics transported the driver to Broward Health Medical Center. Officials said the SUV driver's injuries were minor, and he was able to leave the hospital around 10 p.m.
The driver, who was wheeled out of the hospital in a wheelchair by his wife, appeared to have a cut on his head. He declined to comment on the incident.
No one else involved in the crash needed to be taken to the hospital.
The crash blocked several northbound lanes on I-95, which resulted in heavy traffic delays.
The accident remains under investigation.
