POLK CITY, FL : 4-vehicle accident blocks SR 33 Tuesday on Tuesday, January 3rd 2017
A four-vehicle crash involving a semitrailer carrying hazardous materials blocked both lanes of State Road 33 near the Lake County line in Polk City for several hours late Tuesday afternoon and much of the evening, according to Polk Fire Rescue.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office and Polk Fire Rescue responded to the scene on SR33/Commonwealth Avenue near Bronson Ranch Road - about 10 miles north of Deen Still Road - at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday. Two semitrailers, a pickup and an SUV were involved. Details about the cause of the crash were not available from the Sheriff's Office.Three people were treated for injuries by Fire Rescue, spokesman Kevin Watler said. One man was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center; another man was taken by ambulance to the same hospital; and a woman was treated at the scene but refused to be taken to the hospital. One of the semi drivers was not injured.
Several containers of hazardous waste were damaged in the accident, but Watler said only one appeared to be leaking. None of the waste spilled into the road. About 20 to 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the road, and both lanes were closed well into the night.
