LEWIS, NY : 1 person killed in Northern New York crash on Monday, 4th September 2023

Police say one person died Monday after a driver went the wrong way on a Northern New York highway and crashed into an oncoming car.

It happened on Interstate 87 in the town of Lewis at about 7:45 p.m.

New York State Police say troopers were called to a driver headed north in the southbound lane. When they tried to stop the car, the driver took off and police gave chase. The pursuit ended when the driver hit an oncoming car head-on.

Police say one person was killed and others were seriously injured. They have not yet released any names.

The crash remains under investigation.
