St. George, UT :Car goes off freeway overpass, landing on I-15; woman, baby transported to hospital on Thursday, July 2nd 2015
A woman and a baby were transported to the hospital Thursday morning after their vehicle went off a freeway overpass before landing and becoming disabled in the middle of northbound Interstate 15 near Bluff Street Exit 6 in St. George.Around 7:40 a.m., the 23-year-old woman, driving a gold Ford passenger car with a reported 1-year-old baby inside, was traveling north on Bluff Street, coming upon the freeway overpass, St. George Police Officer Tyrell Bangerter said.“(She) decided to reach into the backseat to get something while she was driving,” Bangerter said. “As she did, she veered over to the right, went off the shoulder, came down the gravel embankment and off this drop-off into the I-15 northbound lane right here just underneath the overpass,” he said, pointing at the debris left in the wake of her path, including a knocked over Interstate 15 sign.No obvious injuries were reported as a result of the collision, he said. However, the driver and the baby were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George to be checked out.No other cars were involved in the crash.“Lucky, lucky she didn’t get hit by incoming traffic,” Bangerter said, “because the car was disabled in the lane.”Bangerter said there’s no insurance on the car, and the driver will be issued a citation for careless driving and the no insurance violation. The car was rendered inoperable during the collision and had to be towed from the scene.Traffic was diverted for an hour away from the through-lane between Exits 5 and 6 on northbound I-15 as emergency responders attended to the scene. This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
