Peoria, IL : Former Notre Dame athlete killed in car crash on Thursday, December, 21st 2017

Former Notre Dame three-sport athlete Gabe Tudor was identified early this week as the Rochester, Minn., resident killed in a car crash on I-74 last week.

According to the Galesburg Register-Mail, Tudor’s Toyota Corolla crossed over the grass median and struck a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle driving west near Woodhull at about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. Tudor got out of his car to talk to the driver of the SUV, then, according to Illinois State Police, “attempted to cross westbound traffic when he was struck and killed by a Ford F-750 traveling westbound.”

Tudor earned 11 letters in wrestling, football and track and field before graduating from Notre Dame in 2012. A four-year varsity football player, he wrestled at 285 pounds where went 122-42 in his career with 82 pins. Tudor led the Irish to three Mid-State 6 Conference titles and was a two-time state qualifier, finishing 39-6 as a senior.

Notre Dame athletics director Matt Blackford issued the following statement about Tudor:

“Gabe was always larger than life. He had an infectious personality and had the ability to light up a gym with his smile. Gabe was a great leader during his time here at Notre Dame. Other students gravitated to him, not just because he was a great leader but also because he was compassionate, understanding and a man of his faith. One of the things I admired most about Gabe, was that he was a compassionate winner. In all of the success he had on the wrestling mat, he never boasted and always accepted the results on the mat graciously. Peoria Notre Dame was blessed to have Gabe and we are all proud of how Gabe lived out his Catholic faith.”

After graduating from Notre Dame, Tudor wrestled for two seasons at St. Cloud State University, an NCAA Division II school in Minnesota. Tudor, 24, had been working as a researcher at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria. Fr. Dominic Faure will officiate. There will be a visitation 30 minutes prior to mass. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
