A Taft motorcyclist died in a crash on Highway 119 Saturday after he was thrown from his motorcycle.

Robert Claude Leiter, 65, died at the scene of the 6:08 p.m. crash, a coroner’s office release said.

Leiter was trying to pass a car on Highway 119 east of Cherry Avenue in Taft when his motorcycle struck the right rear of the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. He then hit a guardrail and was thrown from the bike.

Alcohol and driving at an unsafe speed on the part of Leiter are being investigated as contributing factors to the crash, officers said.
