Howard County, MD : Two men are critically injured in highway crash in the Laurel area Thursday night, June 30, 2016

Two men were critically injured Thursday night when their vehicle left I-95 in Howard County and flipped into the woods, closing southbound traffic on the highway for nearly two hours, authorities said.

Both men were taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma after the crash in the southbound lanes near the rest area and Welcome Center in the Laurel area about 8:45 p.m., Howard County fire and Maryland State police officials said.

Authorities shut down the highway as two Medevac helicopters were called to the scene to transport the victims from the wrecked vehicle, which careened into the trees, according to fire department tweets.

The men remained in critical condition late Thursday, police said, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.

Authorities reopened the highway about 9:30 p.m., state police said.
