Portland, TN : Sumner Co. man killed, wife injured after being struck by car while walking on Rock Bridge Road on Monday, June 13, 2016

One man was killed and his wife was injured when struck by a car on Rock Bridge Road in rural Sumner County on Monday.

Authorities said the couple were walking east on Rock Bridge Road late Monday evening when they were struck by a vehicle headed west.

Authorities said the man, who was 77, died after being transported from the scene. The woman, age 72, was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was in critical but stable condition.

Authorities said they were struck by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by an 18-year-old man.

The preliminary investigation showed that the width of the rural road and the position of the sun may have contributed to the crash.

Authorities said earlier the sun was in the eyes of the driver of the vehicle.

The driver has agreed to be tested for drug and alcohol in his system, according to authorities.

The identification of the victims is being withheld pending notification of the families.
