Phoenix, AZ : Driver arrested after crashing stolen pickup truck into Phoenix home Friday morning, Nov 13, 2015
The driver of a pickup truck who fled after crashing into a Phoenix home Friday morning was arrested after police found him hiding in a nearby house.
The truck hit a home near Broadway Road and 15th Avenue at around 7:30 a.m.
The 45-year-old driver went through a fence and across a yard before crashing into a bedroom. The homeowner said he was lying in bed when it happened and the truck narrowly missed him.
"I just heard a bunch of noise and everything came crashing all over me," Andy Gregory said. "Everything in that room is everything I own and it's pretty much destroyed."
Gregory was not hurt, but it was a very close call.
Gregory is a four-time cancer survivor but said this was one of the scariest situations and closest encounters with death he's ever found himself in and he had only one thought when asked about the driver.
"I wanted to kill him," Gregory said. "I wanted to hurt him."
Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said the driver fled to a house across the street, entered through an unknown location and hid in a closet.
Officers were able to get the occupants out of the residence and the suspect was taken into custody just before 9 a.m.
Investigators determined the truck had been stolen Thursday evening.
The suspect sustained a significant knee injury during the collision and was transported to a local hospital. His name has not been released.
Holmes said once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on charges related to leaving the scene of a traffic collision, auto theft and burglary.
