Baton Rouge, LA : Basin bridge closed following 18-wheeler crash on Monday, 26th August 2019
One person died and at least four were injured Monday when multiple 18-wheelers crashed along with a car on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, leaving a fiery wreck that closed both sides of I-10 as authorities worked to extinguish the flames from a burning tanker.
Thomas Gossen, a spokesperson for the Louisiana State Police, said it's not clear when the bridge, a major corridor between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, would reopen. According to the Department of Transportation and Development, I-10 westbound at the crash site would remain closed through the night and into Tuesday morning as workers removed vehicles and continued bridge inspections.Gossen said at least four people were injured, though others left in private vehicles. The identity of the person killed in the wreck has not been released.
The crash took place Monday at about 2 p.m. on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge at Whiskey Bay at mile marker 125, according to the DOTD.
