A 73-year-old Bemidji woman has died from injuries suffered in a head-on collision Monday night on U.S. Highway 2 west of town that also claimed the life of a Bemidji man.

Margaret K. Porter was driving a 2007 Subaru Forester east in the westbound lane at approximately 11 p.m. on May 27, according to the Minnesota Highway Patrol. She collided with a 2007 Pontiac G6, driven by 21-year-old Athena Anne Stanek of Fosston, in the 6500 block of Highway 2 near Pete’s Place West. The patrol reported Tuesday, May 28, that Margaret Porter’s passenger, Russell Klynn Porter, 82, of Bemidji, died in the crash. First responders initially took Margaret Porter to Sanford in Fargo with life-threatening injuries. The patrol updated its report Wednesday that Margaret Porter also had died from her injuries. Stanek, the driver of the Pontiac, was taken to Sanford Bemidji with injuries that were not life-threatening and has since been released, the report said.

The Pontiac’s airbag did deploy, but it is uncertain if the Subaru’s airbag deployed as well. All three individuals were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
