Millersville, TN : Three people died in crash on Interstate 65 North in Millersville on Tuesday morning, February 23, 2016

Interstate 65 North in Millersville has reopened after a deadly crash shut down the interstate for hours on Tuesday morning.

Police are still working to determine what caused the accident near mile marker 102 that left three people dead.

Just after 6 a.m., a woman driving a maroon Nissan sedan was coming around a curve when her car went into the median and slid sideways into an oncoming Buick sedan.

The Nissan flipped, and the driver was ejected. There were two men inside the Buick. All three were likely killed on impact.

A semi-truck was also struck during the crash, but that driver was not injured.

Lt. Bill Miller with Tennessee Highway Patrol said they are still investigating why the woman's car went into the median.

"This crash behind me rates right up there with some of the worst I've seen in my nearly 20 years as a trooper. They don't get any easier when you see these crashes," Miller said.

Miller said all three victims were wearing their seat belts, but the force of the impact was just too strong for the safety equipment to work.

“Seat belts are your best option in a crash, but this crash was so violent that seat belts, airbags, the best safety equipment available was not able to work,” Miller said.

Officials are still working to notify the victims' families.

State troopers said this is a known problem area, with several major crashes reported in the past few years.

Unlike other parts of I-65, there are no guardrails and no cable barriers separating the northbound and southbound lanes along this stretch of highway.

Channel 4 asked the Tennessee Department of Transportation how they decide where to put barriers, which kind and whether they plan to add them in this area. A spokesperson said, “At this point, we’re just working with THP and their investigation.”
