A Renton man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after the car he was driving crashed into two other vehicles Dec. 27 at Highway 307 and Port Gamble roads.
A second driver, David J. Parcel, 51, of Kingston, was transported by aid to Harrison Medical Center, Paul Petrinovich of Washington State Patrol reported. A third driver, Elizabeth C. Kimple, 53, of Bremerton, was not injured.
Steven C. Velozo, 63, of Renton was driving south on Highway 307 and turned left toward Port Gamble Road when his BMW sedan collided with Parcel’s SUV, which was in the northbound lane of Highway 307, Petrinovich reported. Parcel’s SUV continued off the northbound shoulder and struck trees. Velozo’s car then collided with Kimple’s car.
According to Petrinovich, the cause of the collisions was DUI and failure to yield. Velozo, who was not injured, was charged with DUI.
Velozo and Parcel’s vehicles were totaled. Kimple’s car had reportable damage but was driven from the scene.
The crash occurred at 4:29 p.m. A local resident wrote on Facebook that a family member drove by the site and said “it looked like a car exploded as there were car pieces everywhere.”
Terryl Asla of Brownsville was driving home from the Port of Kingston, where he works, after the collision occurred. The collision “was about a half-mile south of the Port Gamble exit,” he reported. “The road was completely blocked and traffic had to be diverted onto side roads and back through Port Gamble.”
