Two people were killed and two injured in head-on crashes that occurred north of Zumbrota within a half hour of each other Friday night on U.S. Highway 52.

In the first crash, which occurred several miles north of Zumbrota, a southbound car on Highway 52 crossed the median into the northbound lane, colliding with a semitrailer, according to a Minnesota State Patrol report. The stalled car then was struck by a second semi.

Two people in the car — Juan P. Martinez, 47, of Valrico, Fla., and Aishia Y. Ruiz, 23, of Minneapolis — were killed, the report says.

The third person in the car, Paul Martinez, 22, of Rochester, was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital - Saint Marys Campus, Rochester, with serious injuries. He wasn't listed as a patient on Monday morning, according to a Mayo Clinic spokeswoman.

Martinez's family has set up a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising money for Juan's funeral and Paul's medical expenses.

The drivers of the semis — Paul V. Eversman, 62, of Wabasha; and Mark E. Batz, 57, of Apple Valley — didn't appear to be injured, the report says. Both of them were wearing seat belts.

The crash was reported at 8:39 p.m.

Less than a half hour after the fatal crash, a two-car head-on crash occurred on southbound Highway 52 about four miles south of Cannon Falls.

A southbound car driven by Earl Booth, 54, of Minneapolis, struck a guardrail and was facing north when it was struck by a southbound car driven by Kelly J. Hovel, 38, of Zumbrota, according to a State Patrol report. Hovel showed no apparent injury.

Police say speed and inattention played a role in a Sunday evening crash that sent a Merrillville man to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to Indiana State Police, Dustyn Boyd, 27, was driving on the Interstate 65 southbound entrance ramp at U.S. 231 in Crown Point around 8 p.m. when his 2002 Pontiac Grand Am left the road.

Police say the car went into a ditch spinning before it hit a large tree on the passenger side. Police are awaiting toxicology tests but say that speed and driver inattention were likely factors in the crash.

No one was seriously injured Monday in a crash outside of Lucerne that involved two semitrailers and a pickup.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Colo. 392 at Weld County Road 41, about one mile east of U.S. 85. The drivers of the semis, Edwin Morales, 22, and Perry Schild, 58, as well as two unidentified occupants of a white pickup escaped the crash without serious injuries. The passenger of the pickup was taken by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center as a precaution, said Trooper Nate Reid, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Due to reports of a second crash outside of Ault, it was unclear Monday afternoon which semis Morales and Schild were driving at the time of the crash.

One semi was hauling a water tanker and traveling west on Colo. 392. That driver failed to yield to the right of way of an eastbound semi hauling silage, as it attempted to turn south onto Weld 41.

The driver of the second semi attempted to avoid a head-on collision by swerving into the westbound lane. That driver did not see the white pickup, which was traveling west on Colo. 392 directly behind the tanker.

Troopers said they are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who drove away after hitting a 7-year-old boy riding a bicycle.

Daytrayvion McCaskill was riding his bike north on Rouse Road in Orange County and attempted to cross Eastwood Drive using the crosswalk when he was struck by the pickup truck that made a right turn off Eastwood Drive.

Troopers said the boy just missed being severely injured. They said the truck only knocked him to the ground, causing him to scrape his knee, but the driver of the black pickup truck never stopped.

"I just was frantic," said Daytrayvion's mother, Willishia Kellum. "It was horrible. My breath stopped."

Daytrayvion's bike is pretty banged up, but luckily, he suffered only minor injuries.

"I'm getting hit by a car, so I'm thinking I'm going to be under the car," said Daytrayvion. "(The bike) was on top of my leg. Why would you hit me and run like that?"

Officials said the truck was black and had a sticker on it, but it was unclear whether the driver was a man or woman.
