Grand Junction, Co : 13-year-old boy killed in ATV crash in Grand Junction on Friday, January 30, 2015
Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene of a fatal all-terrain vehicle accident at about 5 p.m. Thursday in rugged country near 22 and M roads, in north Grand Junction.
According to scanner traffic, a 13-year-old boy was unresponsive before emergency personnel arrived, and lifesaving techniques were not able to save the victim of the accident. Witnesses among the first to arrive at the scene reported hearing distraught wails from people assumed to be family members of the victim.
The coroner today identified the boy as Lloyd Joseph, who was a student at Fruita 8/9 Middle School.
Following the initial call of an ATV accident and the arrival of first responders to the scene, a St. Mary’s CareFlight helicopter was put on standby, but was not dispatched to the scene.
Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and officials with the Lower Valley Fire Department assisted at the scene following the accident.
Responders staged near the address at 2188 M Road. The property backs up to the north desert area, and provides access to numerous trails and roads used for ATV travel.
County public records about the address did not provide any further information about the owners of the property where responders arrived on scene.
Law enforcement did not immediately release details of how the crash occurred, nor specific injuries the boy suffered as a result of the crash.
No other ATVs or riders were believed to have been involved, according to dispatch traffic.
