Miami , FL : Off-duty Miami Police sergeant injured in crash after s struck by a driver while riding his personal motorcycle on Friday ,February 13th 2015
An off-duty Miami Police officer riding his personal motorcycle was rushed to the hospital Friday after, investigators said, he was struck by a driver who fled from the scene.
Police and rescue crews arrived on the scene of the crash on Northwest 15th Avenue near 62nd Street in Liberty City, just after 7 p.m. Investigators said Miami Police Sgt. Marvin Sanders was traveling southbound on Northwest 15th Avenue when the subject, who was heading north and was attempting to make a left turn, struck the motorcycle.
According to Miami Police, the subject, who was driving a white, older model, possibly antique Chevy Caprice, got out of the vehicle, looked at the victim, then got back in his car and drove away. "He stepped out of the car, looked at him, and basically he got back in the car and took off," said Miami Police Officer Rene Pimentel.
Paramedics rushed Sanders in stable condition to Jackson Memorial Hospital with a police escort. Officials said the victim, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, suffered some broken bones, but he is expected to be OK.
Residents who live near the scene of the accident told 7News he could not understand why the driver chose to flee. "You've got to have a conscience. If you don't have a conscience, you're going to keep hitting and running," said David Smith. "People with conscience stop."
"You don't got no heart," said a man. "That's how that is. He don't have a heart."
Pimentel echoed the neighbors' comments. "Who would leave someone just stranded, regardless of what your driving conditions are?" he said. "The bottom line is, if you get into an accident, you must, and should ... stop."
Investigators said fellow police officers gathered outside of the hospital in a show of support. Friday was Sanders' birthday.
