Salem, OR : Man dies in A multiple vehicle crash on Highway 223 north of Dallas early Wednesday morning, November 16, 2016

A multiple vehicle crash on Highway 223 just north of Dallas killed one man and injured another early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Oregon State Police troopers responded to the scene at around 3:15 a.m. and discovered a car down an embankment, a tractor pulling a loaded log trailer in a ditch and a pickup with front end damage.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Tad Young, 34, of Silverton, was driving his 1999 Toyota Tacoma south on Kings Valley Highway when it crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2000 Toyota Corolla head-on.

After the crash, the Tacoma came to rest on the road, and the Corolla, driven by Louis Hildago, 39, of Dallas, rolled down an embankment. A 2006 Kenworth semi-truck loaded with logs was behind the Corolla at the time of the crash. The driver, Steven Follett, 65, of Philomath, swerved to avoid the collision and veered into a ditch.

Hildago was pronounced dead at the scene. Follett was not injured. Young suffered minor injuries but refused medical transport.

State police officials said Young is cooperating with the investigation. Fatigue is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash.

The crash and investigation closed Highway 223 for seven hours Wednesday morning. The Dallas Police Department, Polk County Sheriff's Office and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted state police in its response.
