A family of five is in the hospital after Baytown police said a sleepy driver rammed into the back of their SUV.
Officers said that driver was coming from Louisiana and headed toward Houston when he fell asleep at the wheel.
His car crashed into the rear end of a Jeep on Interstate 10 near the Garth Road Exit. The impact sent the Jeep off the freeway, careening down an embankment, before eventually coming to a stop in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
Five family members were inside the Jeep at the time: a man, a woman and three others, including a young child.
Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the man and woman by helicopter to Memorial Herman Hospital. Baytown police said the three other passengers were also brought to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The driver who fell asleep at the wheel was not hurt in the crash.
