SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA : Two-car accident at Sugarloaf St./Rte. 116 on Thursday, December 22nd 2016
South Deerfield, Massachusetts
No one was hurt when two cars crashed head-on at Sugarloaf Street and Route 116, at the base of Mount Sugarloaf, just after 6:45 a.m. Thursday.
At the scene shortly after 7 a.m., South Deerfield firefighters could be seen sweeping up debris and helping workers operating a few flatbed trucks take the cars away. On the side of the road, police officers talked with the drivers involved.
“Air bags and safety belts kept them safe,” Deerfield Patrolman Adam Sokoloski said about the two people who were in the crash, noting that “South County EMS obtained refusals from involved parties, while South Deerfield Fire Department cleaned up the mess.”
According to Sokoloski, the “at-fault” driver was turning from Route 116 onto Sugarloaf Street, and the other vehicle “was traveling south on Sunderland Road toward Sunderland.” Sokoloski noted that “Officer Dane Jobst issued the at-fault driver a citation for failure to use care in turning.”
During the cleanup, officers rerouted traffic around the crash scene and kept the intersection open to traffic.
In light of accident and the upcoming Christmas weekend, Sokoloski added, “As we approach holiday weekend and expected heavy travel, we are reminding people to slow down, use care at intersections and buckle up!”
