Sacramento, CA : Two Venturans identified as victims in crash north of Santa Barbara on Tuesday, June 27, 2017
Two Ventura residents were identified by officials Tuesday as victims of a suspected DUI crash in the mountains north of Santa Barbara.
A vehicle carrying five young people from Ventura rolled down an embankment Monday night on Gibraltar Road south of East Camino Cielo, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two of the teens died from injuries suffered in the crash, the patrol reported.
They were identified as Lily Afton Brennan, 17, and Lesli Michael Sandoval Nunez, 19, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office. Both young women were pronounced dead at the scene about 10:30 p.m., the patrol reported.
The crash was reported at 9:23 p.m. after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and it went off the roadway, falling about 300 feet and rolling numerous times. The driver, Brian Woodward, 19, was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.
Crews from the Montecito Fire Protection District as well as the Santa Barbara city and county fire departments were called to the scene. Due to the remote and rugged terrain, a helicopter, air ambulance and Santa Barbara County sheriff's search-and-rescue team responded to help reach the victims, officials said.
A helicopter hoisted Woodward from the vehicle first and took him to a landing site along Gibraltar Road before he was transferred to the air ambulance and flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, authorities said. Woodward and a16-year-old passenger suffered major injuries, officials said. The helicopter hoisted the teen out of the vehicle and the teen was flown directly to the same hospital, authorities said.
It took several hours to extricate the third person, who suffered minor injuries, and the 19-year-old was taken by ground ambulance to the Santa Barbara hospital, officials said.
Authorities said Woodward remained in the hospital Tuesday afternoon. Conditions were not known for the other two passengers.
