WESSINGTON SPRINGS,SD : Two men killed, another injured in head-on collision near Wessington Springs on July, Thursday 27th 2017

Two people were killed in a head-on collision Thursday about eight miles west of Wessington Springs, according to authorities.

A 75-year-old man and a 30-year-old man died when the Ford F-350 they were in collided with a 2005 International 8000 semi truck at about 11:40 a.m. on S.D. Highway 34 near the intersection of 373rd Avenue. The driver of the semi, a 52-year-old man, sustained life-threatening injuries. Names of the people involved are not being released at this time to allow notification of family members.


According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the Ford pickup was eastbound on Highway 34 when it crossed the centerline and collided with the westbound semi. The Ford entered the south ditch and started on fire. The male driver, 75, and the 30-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi was transported to a Wessington Springs hospital and later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Officials were on scene for several hours Thursday mapping out the scene of the crash, according to Jerauld County Sheriff Jason Weber. South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.

The Wessington Springs Fire Department, Jerauld County Ambulance, Jerauld County Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol responded.

No other information was immediately available Thursday night.
