Daytona Beach, FL : Two arrested, one sought in Daytona Beach crash on Wednesday, August 27, 2014
A dramatic crash in Daytona Beach on Wednesday was a result of drag racing, police officers say, with the cars traveling at an estimated 80 miles per hour.
"One of those cars then strikes an innocent person who's just driving along, the stolen car flips over, trapping three bad guys in it," explained Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.
It happened at the intersection of George W. Engram Blvd. and Ellsworth. Police say a 1995 beige Ford Ranger was reported stolen and clipped another truck, causing the Ford Ranger to flip and land onto of the silver Toyota.
"You have an innocent person, who's driving along, who could have very easily been killed by these guys," said Chitwood, "because they just think it's funny to drive up and down like this."
Police say three suspects were in the stolen truck. Officers said one suspect was soon captured. Another suspect was trapped inside the car. Those two men were taken to the hospital and now face charges. Police are still looking for a third suspect who fled.
"I saw cars lined up over here," said witness David Bailey. "We saw people over here, heard the police and stuff coming from the back."
Bailey lives right down the street from where the crash happened and said he has witnessed cars speeding on this stretch of road before.
"I'm legally blind. We walk back and forth to the bus stop and stuff, and we've noticed people speeding back and forth before," he said.
The two suspects that were caught face charges including trespassing in a conveyance. Police are also still looking for the other car that was apparently drag racing, described as a silver Doge Charger.
