Penn Laird, VA : Motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash at U.S. 220 on Sunday, April 17th, 2016
A man has been charged with felony hit and run after a motorcyclist in Franklin County was killed in a crash Sunday night.
Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rick Garletts said Carl Edward Pence was driving a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on U.S. 220 just north of Rocky Mount when he crashed into a deer. He was thrown into the road and then struck by a 2013 Freightliner truck. The wreck happened around 8:40 p.m. near Calvary Lane.
Pence, 35, of Rocky Mount, died at the scene. Garletts said he was wearing a helmet.
Police said the Freightliner truck continued to drive on U.S. 220 and was stopped by police in Boones Mill. Kevin Blackburn, 37, of Thomasville, North Carolina, was charged with felony hit and run.
Garletts said Blackburn was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
