West Bend, WI : 18-year-old student hit and killed while filling up his car with gas along the side of the road Monday afternoon, February 15, 2016
An 18-year-old West Bend West student was hit and killed while filling up his car with gas along the side of the road Monday afternoon.
The crash happened on U.S. 45 at Highway 33 in West Bend.
Students coming out of late night basketball practice at West Bend West High School told WISN 12 News it was an emotional night.
They were told by coaches and staff that the 18-year-old senior had been killed.
"People at practice were saying it. It hurt a lot. He's always at our practices,” West Bend West freshman Leaha Moederndorfer.
Moederndorfer said the student was very outgoing and well-liked. He enjoyed going to basketball games and being with his friends.
Moederndorfer said students are devastated to learn about his death.
"I was just heartbroken. People don't watch where they're going. They need to watch where they're going more,” Moederndorfer said.
The teen was in a red Honda.
The driver of a silver van traveled onto the shoulder of the road and hit the man. The van driver stayed at the scene.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is withholding the man’s name while family is still notified.
The superintendent said there will be grief counselors available to all West Bend students Tuesday to help them mourn the young man's death.
The driver of the van was a 34-year-old man from Palmyra. Alcohol and drugs don't appear to be factors.
