A Brooklet woman was killed Monday morning when her 2004 Ford Expedition, driven by someone else, overturned on Interstate 16 in Emanuel County.
Marianne DeLoache Lackey of River Retreat in Brooklet was killed in the rollover around 8:17 a.m., reports stated.
The driver, Matthew Dekane Dyches of North College Street in Statesboro, was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment of head injuries, said Georgia State Patrol Post 19 Sgt. J. W. Cain, who investigated the crash.
Cain said Dyches, 38, was Lackey's yard man and was driving her, in her vehicle, to Atlanta to an appointment regarding her passport.
According to reports, Dyches was suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and refused tests at the scene. Cain said he was alert and walking around but was airlifted to Savannah for the head injury.
A portion of the interstate was blocked until 1:30 p.m. Monday as investigators examined the accident. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continues the investigation.
Dyches had an expired license, reports stated. Charges are pending, Cain said.
According to her Facebook account, Lackey, 78, was a former education instructor at Georgia State University. Retired, she also taught finance and accounting for several years at Statesboro High School.
