PINAL COUNTY, AZ : 1 dead, 1 critical in I-10 crash involving ambulance in Pinal County on Sunday, 18th February 2024

A deadly crash involving an ambulance shut down I-10 for roughly 10 miles outside of the Valley early Sunday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, a crash occurred on I-10 eastbound near SR 387, just outside of Casa Grande, around 6:30 a.m. The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the American Medical Response ambulance was going east when the driver “possibly fell asleep.” The vehicle reportedly lost control and swerved from end to end on the roadway before rolling over and landing on its wheels. The ambulance was not transporting any patients, but it was occupied by the driver, a man, and a co-worker, a woman, in the passenger seat.

As two good Samaritans stopped to help — a man and a woman from a second and a third vehicle — a fourth vehicle crashed into the ambulance and struck the two good Samaritans. The man died at the scene, while the woman was taken to a hospital. The extent of her injuries is currently unknown.

The driver who struck the ambulance had minor injuries, as well as the ambulance driver. The co-worker in the ambulance passenger seat was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The sobriety of the driver who struck the ambulance is under investigation, but troopers believe he was impaired before the crash.
