Laurens,SC : Prison chaplain died in Laurens wreck on may, monday 8th 2017
A prison chaplain at Tyger River Correctional Institution in Enoree died Monday after crashing his vehicle.
Stuart Allen Edmisten, 56, of 1340 Wilson Drive in Laurens, collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 76 and Barnes Road in Laurens around 7:55 a.m. Monday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol and Laurens County Coroner’s Office.Edmisten, who was driving a 1999 Mazda Protégé, was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other driver, in a 2008 Nissan van, was not injured, Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the highway patrol said.
Edmisten was wearing a seat belt at the time, Rhyne said.
He was just a half mile from his house when the crash occurred, Laurens County Chief Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek said.
Edmisten was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m. and died of blunt force trauma to the chest, Cheek said.
Cheek knew Edmisten personally. They were members of the same church and Check considered Edmisten “a dear friend.”
“It gives me cold chills,” she said by phone Tuesday. “He was just a good Christian family man. They had five children. All of the children are just following from his steps.
Cheek said Edmisten was fun to be around and always willing to lend a hand to someone, most recently serving as a chaplain for prison inmates at Tyger River.
Tyger River Correctional Institution is in Enoree in the southern end of Spartanburg County.
