Gloversville,NY : High-speed chase ends in crash on March, Thursday 22nd 2018
A Montgomery County driver was unhurt, but later ticketed on numerous charges, after leading city police on a high-speed chase late Thursday that forced a van off a road and culminated in his airborne car crashing upside down in a wooded area.
Sgt. Eric Johnson on Friday related details of the incident, which occurred in the city at 9:59 p.m. Thursday.
He said driver James C. Costanzo, 37, of 625 Burtonville Road, town of Charleston, was ticketed following an accident on charges of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless driving, failure to obey an officer, speeding in zone, failure to keep right, imprudent speed, five tickets for failure to stop at a stop sign, and an equipment violation.
Costanzo was released in lieu of $200 bail. He will answer the charges at 9 a.m. April 10 in City Court.
Johnson said that Costanzo, who was operating a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse, allegedly ran from police because his license was suspended.
The officer recounted that just before 10 p.m., two Johnstown police officers in a patrol car tried to stop the vehicle occupied by driver Costanzo and a passenger on North Comrie Avenue near Sam’s Seafood & Steakhouse. Initially, Johnson said Costanzo gave an indication he was going to stop, pulling into toward the Speedway station.
But Johnson said Costanzo decided to run southbound on Route 30A, making a right onto Briggs Street and a left onto Jansen Avenue. He said the driver was allegedly committing many, multiple traffic violations as he took Jansen to East Main Street. Johnson said Costanzo made a right onto East Main Street and allegedly forced a van off the street and onto a sidewalk.
Costanzo’s vehicle then went left onto Chase Street, with another left heading eastbound on East State Street, then making an abrupt right onto Frasier Avenue.
Johnson said the vehicle then drove to the end of Connolly Drive, made a 45 degree turn through a lawn and was “launched” into the air for about 25 yards, winding upside down on its roof in a wooden area.
The sergeant said Costanzo and his passenger were not injured, nor were officers involved in the pursuit.
