Wildwood, FL : 88-year-old man killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75 in Sumter County on Friday, June 10, 2016

An 88-year-old man who was the subject of a Silver Alert was killed Friday in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Clifford Schilling was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 when he collided with another vehicle about 5:30 a.m.

Troopers said several attempts to alert Schilling before the crash were unsuccessful.

As Schilling continued southbound, Sumter County deputies tossed out stop sticks, but a second vehicle struck them.

The second vehicle ended up in the northbound emergency lane and was struck head-on by Schilling.

Schilling was killed in the crash and the driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
