Spartanburg, SC : One dead, one injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County on Monday morning, September 15, 2014

One Upstate pastor was killed and another hurt in a series of collisions which affected the east and west lanes of Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County on Monday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The crashes happened between mile markers 28 and 29, near U.S. 221. Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne said a single-vehicle crash occurred just before 5 a.m. Rhyne said the two men were in a 1987 Toyota pickup that was traveling east and towing a golf cart on a trailer. The driver, identified as Timothy Holden, lost control after the trailer began to fishtail and the vehicle overturned in the median. Rhyne said both men were ejected and thrown into the westbound lane. The passenger was then hit and killed by a vehicle traveling west, which did not stop after the collision. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Jemel Lawter Jr. died at the scene. Holden, 48, was rushed to the hospital. Family members said Holden is the director of the Seeds of Hope Outreach Ministry in Woodruff. Lawter, who goes by the nickname "Jay," was the youth pastor at Morningside Baptist Church in Union, according to Facebook. Two other minor crashes occurred on the eastbound side of the interstate. Rhyne said no major injuries were reported in those secondary crashes. All westbound lanes were blocked as first responders worked to clear a crash on that side of the interstate. Traffic began moving freely in all directions and troopers confirmed all lanes had reopened just after 10 a.m. Rhyne said troopers have identified a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord as a "vehicle of interest" in the hit and run.
