Lakeland , FL : 2- Years old boy killed and several others injured in crash after she lost Control of Vehicle along Interstate 75 in Manatee County on Saturday , February 28th 2015
A Winter Haven woman has been charged with DUI manslaughter and 10 other counts of DUI with injury after she lost control of a vehicle containing 11 passengers including nine children, leaving one dead and several others seriously injured Saturday evening on Interstate 75 in Manatee County.
The driver, Shameka L. Jones, 24, of 409 Avenue A NE, is hospitalized but facing multiple charges, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
None of the children, who range in age from 6 months to 10 years old, were in car safety seats or wearing seat belts.
Her son, Isaac Solomon, 2, of Winter Haven was pronounced dead at South Bay Hospital from injuries suffered during the crash. Four of her other children were also in the crash.
Jones was driving northeast in a 2001 Ford Expedition shortly before 5 p.m. when the SUV hit the eastbound shoulder of I-75, flipping several times and hitting trees before coming to a rest overturned facing north.
The Highway Patrol said there were 12 total people, all from Winter Haven, in the Expedition, including the nine children.
Jones and passengers Shawna T. Jones, 25, Leonard M. Green, 44, and 6-month-old Issah Solomon are being treated for serious injuries. Shawna Jones is the mother of four of the injured children.
Omanarion Jones, 10, Shallnita Jones, 7, Katrionna Jones, 5, Leyonna Jones, 5, Lavay Jones, 5, Freddie Solomon, 3, and Jamya Tention, 2, suffered minor injuries, according to Highway Patrol.
The injured were taken to four Tampa Bay area hospitals.
The driver and Green were wearing seat belts. It is not known at this time whether Shawna Jones was wearing a seat belt.
