Brunswick, GA : Glynn County school bus involved in accident on Monday, December 5th, 2016
A Glynn County school bus was hit in the rear Monday morning on U.S. Highway 82. No one was injured, but a few students complained of soreness immediately after the incident, according to a release from the Glynn County School System.
The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. The bus was carrying 42 students from Risley Middle School and Glynn Academy, the release said.
“The bus had pulled up to an address on (Hwy.) 82 where the child lives … just like they do every morning,” said Glynn County Schools Police Chief Rod Ellis. “It stopped, activated its warning commands, and a car just hit them in the back of them.”Ellis said he was on the scene within 10 minutes, and as far as he knows the bus driver was not at fault. A drug and alcohol screening was later performed on the driver as a matter of protocol, Ellis said.
“None of them were seriously hurt. A couple complained, ‘My back hurts,’ ‘My head hurts,’ etcetera, from the impact,” Ellis said. “But those buses, I’ll tell you, they’re tough.”
The students who complained of soreness were checked at the scene by EMTs before being released.Another bus was sent to the scene to transport the students to school. Ellis said he received questions from parents, asking why the students were not evacuated immediately from the bus, but he said it was safer for the students to remain on the bus due to traffic on the highway.
“A lot of time, it’s safer to keep them on the buses,” Ellis said. “We do bus evacuation drills in case we have an emergency and the kids do have to get out rapidly.”
Risley Middle School and Glynn Academy placed an “all-call” to notify parents.
